3 Tips for Prepping your Property’s Drainage For Fall Rain
In Texas, fall rain can be constant, which can cause excessive moisture buildup in the soil under and around your home’s foundation. Due to the summer drought followed by heavy fall rain, your home’s foundation may undergo a large amount of stress. Without the right measures to protect your property and ensure proper drainage, you may require foundation repairs:
1. Have Your Home’s Drainage System Inspected
Contract a foundation repair company to verify the overall integrity of your drainage system. This should include inspections of the slope of your land, passive and active drainage systems, your gutters, and anything else that can compromise the ability of water to naturally drain away from your foundation. Over time, your home and the soil around it settles, so you may need to re-grade areas.
2. Make Adjustments as Necessary
You may want to consider preemptive foundation repairs and reinforcement, especially if you live in an old home. Extend downspouts if necessary, and add additional drainage measures, like non-permeable channels, to direct water further away from your home’s foundation. Identify areas that may cause water pooling during heavy rains, and fill them in as best you can. You may also wish to have professional drainage systems, such as French drains, installed.
3. Clean Your Gutters
Make sure your gutters are ready to do their job before the fall rains arrive. Clean them and inspect them for leaks, rust, or bending. Test your gutters by using a hose on your roof, and check to see that the downspouts don’t leak and safely direct water away from your home’s walls.
